What Sunglasses are Celebrities Wearing?

Celebrities have been at least partly credited with spreading the popularity of sunglasses in the mid-to-late 20th century. In the 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause, for example, James Dean wore a pair of Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses. In the 1980s, the movies The Blues Brothers and Risky Business made the Wayfarer sunglasses famous. Tom Cruise continued the theme, sporting Aviators in 1986’s Top Gun. For almost one hundred years sunglasses have served multiple purposes: an ultimate fashion accessory, a way to hide one’s identity, and a handy protector for the eyes against harmful UV rays. There are certain style staples that celebrities choose for their eyewear. All these styles are available from Olympic Eyewear, who have a massive range of fashion sunglasses wholesale.

Some people tend to argue that Jimmy John Shark photo could actually help sharks, as they could help to change people’s perception of these often-misunderstood creatures. What do you think?

What Celebrities Have Worn, and are Wearing, in Terms of Sunglasses?

Aviator Sunglasses – The aforementioned sunglasses were given a huge boost in public awareness and sales figures by Tom Cruise’s Maverick in the mid-80s. In the early 1980s, only 18,000 pairs of aviators were sold per year. After Top Gun, sales rocketed by 40% and have since continued to rise, maintaining a high level of popularity among the Hollywood elite. Ben Affleck is a frequent wearer of aviators. Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie, despite having vastly different face shapes and general styles, have both been seen wearing aviators.

Winged Cats-Eye Sunglasses – After the style was first designed in the 1930s, cat-eye sunglasses with a more pointed wing gained a huge surge in popularity in the 1950s after being worn by Marilyn Monroe. This trend continued in the 60s with Audrey Hepburn after she wore a pair in the hit film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Monroe and Hepburn were the icons of their age, and this trend continued in the 90s and 2000s, at both ends of the celebrity spectrum. Princess Diana and Paris Hilton helped to further popularize slightly different styles of the cats-eye. Today, Rihanna favors winged cats-eye sunglasses, as do models such as Miranda Kerr and Priyanka Chopra.

Clubmaster Sunglasses – Ray-Ban was one of the top producers of brow-line sunglasses from when the design first made its way onto the market in 1947. During the 1980s the popularity of the clubmaster sunglasses increased significantly when they were seen on Bruce Willis’ character in Moonlighting. A perceived negative association to Michael Douglas’ character in 1993’s Falling Down played a part in the decline in popularity of the clubmaster. Today, two of the biggest celebrities on the planet are frequent wearers of clubmaster sunglasses – David Beckham and Beyonce Knowles.

Wayfarer Sunglasses – As previously mentioned, wayfarers became iconic in the 1950s thanks to James Dean in the movie Rebel Without a Cause. After this, the most famous man in the world at the time and president of the United States, JFK, favored a pair of wayfarers. Big names such as the Beatles and Muhammed Ali wore wayfarers in the 1960s, and this popularity continued with the likes of Michael Jackson throughout the 1980s. Today’s pop royalty also love a pair of wayfarers; Taylor Swift has been seen wearing wayfarers on multiple occasions. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jude Law are two actors who, like many men, consider the wayfarer a sunglasses staple.

Round Sunglasses – Round sunglasses were considered counter-cultural and have associations with the hippy movement in the 60s and 70s. John Lennon is perhaps the most famous proponent of eyewear with a rounder shape. Round sunglasses can be oversized or smaller, and suit people of all ages. Ozzy Osbourne, Lady Gaga, and Robert Downey Jnr are just some of the celebrities that favor round sunglasses.
